Prompt: An urban fantasy show with Thimble Island by Rasputina as the theme song.

ANGELS UNAWARE
Genre: Fantasy/drama, hour-long format.
Opening theme: Thimble Island -- Rasputina
Synopsis: Every year, angels come of age and, as per an old tradition, are sent to Earth as last trial before adulthood. Left somewhere on Earth to go through a personal ordeal, they stumble their way through dealing with humanity, sometimes make friends, and fight to control abilities that never had this many triggers in Heaven. The story follows four of them through their struggles. In addition, all of them feel a call, pulling them towards parts unknown, a feeling they at first assume is part of the trial, but as events unfold, it starts to look like something else is calling to them, something no one thought actually existed.

CAST

New York

Claire Hall: Liza Lapira
Angels are divided into many tribes, each with their own way of life. Claire's tribe is competitive. There is a hierarchy of angels, and to not be in that hierarchy means you are considered to be less worthy. A few spots are left open on a regular basis for angels who have recently finished their trial, and the competition for it is harsh; though technically trial is not a time for competing against others, the hierarchy often looks the other way if an accident happens when two members of the tribe on trial meet.
The show opens with Claire, waking up for the first time on Earth, on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. She's left with an ID and three hundred dollars in her pocket, and nothing else. The call gets her moving before the end of the first episode. Claire is a driven, single-minded angel; when there's a goal in mind, she focuses on it to the exclusion of all else. When she manages to pull her mind away from a goal, though, she's generally good-natured and laid back. She can be very blunt, and prefers honesty whenever possible, though she can lie very well when she has to to achieve her goals.

Brian Carter
A human, Claire meets him on her way out of the city and joins his friends on their way home to California. Brian is generally the leader of the trio, by way of owning the car; he's idealistic and generally a happy person, if unfamiliar with the concept of personal space. He's not seen after the group reaches Las Vegas in episode four, except for a brief goodbye scene in episode five.

Grace Russell
Human, Brian's girlfriend, and even more idealistic than him. She's lived a sheltered life -- the trip to New York is the first time she's been out of the are around their small hometown -- and she's easily fooled. She's not seen after the group reaches Las Vegas.

Noah Sullivan: Arthur Darvill
Human and the last member of the trio Claire meets, Noah is more grounded and realistic than his friends, but he's still an optimist at heart. He's known them both since he was a child, but he's planning on leaving; the trip is a last goodbye now that he's planning on moving away from their hometown. Noah and Claire become fast friends, sharing a relaxed nature and a love of words; he proposes staying to help her when she says she's leaving them, especially after finding out the people are complete strangers to her. But it's not until he meets Maddie and falls head-over-heels for her that he makes up his mind to stay.

Tampa

Emily Smith: Dichen Lachman
Emily's tribe is strictly structured; those that pass their ordeals are given a title and a job to do, and expected to do it. What you do in your free time is your own business, so long as you do what you're supposed to; if you can not or choose not to do it, you are considered mentally unfit. At the start of the trial, they give a two-week grace period in which abilities are reigned in to adjust to Earth and learn your surroundings, with help of a member of the tribe on Earth.
Emily wakes up in a sparsely furnished studio apartment in Florida with a number to call. In the pilot, her two-week grace period is a thirty-six hours from being over, and she hears the call for the first time. A quiet girl, Emily keeps everyone at arms length and prefers to study rather than interact, but so far studying has not given her any confidence for her ordeal. When Simon shows up, he convinces her to come with him to figure out what the call is. Two hours into their trip, her grace period ends and Simon finds out her destructive potential -- she'd only barely learned to control her explosive ability in the calm of Heaven.

Simon Carmichael: Lee Thompson Young
Simon's tribe is familial; though smaller families form inside of it, the entire tribe stays small and close. All members of the tribe are given the name Carmichael when they come to Earth for their ordeal, as a shorthand to recognize their own kind; now they generally use it to refer to the tribe even in Heaven. Most of them are put with a member of the tribe on Earth and base themselves there for their trial.
Simon woke up in Miami, in a hotel owned by the tribe, and started moving before the first week ended. He is the most affected by the call, and it makes the wanderlust he's always felt naturally even worse; but even this can't hold down his excitement for finally being on Earth. A curious, high-spirited angel, he's been waiting eagerly for his trial for almost as long as he's known it was going to happen. He doesn't join the show until the second episode, when he meets Emily in Tampa, but quickly becomes a part of the main cast. Over the course of the first half of the season, he realizes the call gets to him so badly because as opposed to lacking special abilities, as he thought, he's psychically sensitive; the call has been drowning out anything else he might feel.

Isabelle Lewis: Rehma Shetty
The woman helping Emily until Simon shows up. She deals in music, and she's most often seen with a pair of headphones on. Isabelle disapproves of Emily's rash decision to leave, having heard and ignored the call during her own trial, but she proves to be a helpful ally in the end.

Las Vegas

Maddie Carmichael: Anna Popplewell
Another member of the Carmichael tribe, Maddie woke up on a table in a casino run by one of the tribe on Earth and has since set up with him. That was three months ago as of the pilot, and so far, her trial has yet to make itself clear to her. Waiting has left her restless, and the call isn't helping. When Claire and Noah show up in episode four, followed the next day by Simon and Emily, she's eager to join them in the search for the call's source.
Maddie's not the best at thinking on her feet and she's not booksmart, but she's good at reading people and getting information from them. She makes a lot of friends wherever she goes and most contacts that the group aren't put in touch with are gained through Maddie. She's aware of Noah's crush on her, but until he finds out the full details about what the four of them are, she pretends not to be; afterward, she admits to Simon that she knows, but she still isn't sure what to do about it.

Jack Carmichael: Nate Corddry
The owner of two tribe-run businesses in Las Vegas, a casino and a small bar. He's more attached to the bar, but both of them do well. He almost always has a tribe member living in his guest room, either someone on their trial or someone who's just decided to stay on Earth. Fatherly to anyone who seems to need it and friendly to everyone, Jack is a constant source of advice for the group, even after they leave Las Vegas, but his practical mind won't accept that the legends about the call might be true, not even long enough to share them.

April Carmichael: China Chow
Jack's right-hand woman; she has a head for numbers and an ear for gossip. She lives with Jack, and between that and work, they spend most of their time together; they're extremely close and will go to each other first, no matter what they're dealing with. April's become superstitous in her years on Earth, and believes most legends, whether they originated with humans or angels. She's the group's main source of information about the call, but with all the contradictions that come with myths, it's almost as little help as Jack's silence.

Lauren Miller: Summer Glau
Of the same tribe as Emily, Lauren deals in history, specifically myths and legends. Though she researches them she doesn't necessarily believe in all of them, and she and April have many spirited debates about what's real and what's not. It's April's idea to call in Lauren for an objective point of view; but none of them have any idea of the secrets the bookish angel is keeping from them.

Seattle

Charlie Davis: Matt Bomer
A runaway from Emily's tribe, Charlie still has a passion for cartography, which was to be his job, but hated the structure of the tribe. He has ties with both Jack and Isabel, but he stumbles into the group on his own. He gives them a place to stay in Seattle when they get there, and he ends up being the key to figuring out where to go next, but all Charlie really wants is his maps and maybe a couple of friends.

Joe: Jonathan Young
The member of a tribe that is the basis for guardian angels, Joe (or, properly, Jophiel) is first met by the group on the way to Seattle, and meets them again in the city. While he says he wants to help, his misinformation leaves it up in the air whether he has their best interests at heart, or if he has his own reasons for making things difficult.
